Features and Outcomes of Epileptic Seizure in Tuberous Sclerosis

Abstract
Background:
@EN It is well known that various types of epilepsy can occur in the patients with tuberous sclerosis. We reviewed the clinical features and outcomes of epileptic seizures in the children with tuberous sclerosis.
@ES Method:
@EN Medical records of the 57 epileptic patients (male 32, female 15) among the 67 children with tuberous sclerosis were reviewed in regard to seizure types, age at onset of seizure, electroencephalographic findings, clinical course and outcome.
@ES Result:
@EN Of the 33 patients with generalized seizure, 19 showed tonic or clonic seizure and 14 manifested infantile spasm. Of the 19 patients with partial seizure 10 showed simple and 9 showed complex partial seizure. Eletroencephalographic findings
were
normal in 10, generalized epileptiform discharges in 13, focal epileptiform discharges in 21, and multifocal epileptiform discharges in 10. After the administration of appropriate antiepileptic drugs, 22 became seizure-free. The response rates
according
to seizure type were as follows: simple partial seizure 62.5%, generalized seizure 35.3%, infantile spasm 46.2%, and complex partial seizure 25.0%. The response rates according to the EEG findings were 41.2% in focal, 55.6% in multifocal and
16.7%
in
generalized epileptiform discharges.
@ES Conclusion:
@EN It is concluded that the patients with complex partial seizure or generalized seizure and the patients who showed generalized epileptiform discharges were less responsive to the medical treatment.
